Playa de los Muertos, Puerto Vallarta

Playa de Los Muertos is located in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a few miles away from the Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport. The beach got its name “beach of the dead” after Pirates massacred the population along the beachfront a long time ago. Now, it is one of the favorite beaches in Puerto Vallarta.

How to get there

Tourists can get to the beach by taxi or local transportation. As Puerto Vallarta has narrow roads, there are not many parking spots around the city nor the beach. The southern side of the beach is a very popular meeting point for gay and lesbians tourists. Although the beach lacks the distinctive clear blue water, it is a great destination for any kind of tourist.

Activities on the beach

Playa de Los Muertos offers tourists a lot of fun activities. For example, between December and March, humpback whales can be seen swimming offshore, along with dolphins or porpoises. Kayaking is another possibility, but Puerto Vallarta is most known as a top diving destination. Visitors can also choose to go

  • snorkeling
  • sailing
  • parasailing
  • banana boat riding
  • beach volleyball or
  • jet skiing.

Along the beach, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops where everyone can enjoy a traditional Mexican dish or drink. Also, there are a lot of vendors selling almost everything, for example:

  • jewelry
  • bakery goods
  • wood carved accessories
  • blankets
  • souvenirs
  • and traditional Mexican clothes.

In the evening, the beach transforms itself into a wonderful spot to enjoy the sunset. When night falls, all the bars and restaurants come to life. At this time most of the tourists like to spend a few hours in this place full of traditions.

The facilities available at Playa de Los Muertos include:
