Ninety Mile Beach, Cape Reinga

The beautiful and scenic 55 mi (or 88 km) long Ninety Mile Beach is located in Cape Reinga on New Zealand’s North Island.

The most noticeable feature of the beach is its dunes, which are a great attraction for body boarders. One thing that surprises visitors here is that this stretch of the beach is actually used as an alternative road when the highway is closed either for repairs or is impassable due to floods.

Activities at Ninety Mile Beach include swimming and surfcasting, as well as nature walking in the adjacent Aupouri Forest.

Accessing the beach

The 90 Mile Beach is a pretty isolated place, and accessing it requires special arrangements. The most proper way to reach Reinga from the town of Kaitaia, usually by a 4WD vehicle. The distance is about 100 km. There are also coach tours from Kaitaia, as well as flights from the town of Paihia.
